Key Game Announcement Postponed

The spring owners’ meetings usually generate a spate of buzz, including rule changes, compensatory picks and – this year – the carefully-worded volleys between the player’s union and the League. In recent years the schedule-makers took this opportunity to reveal to the general public a few choice pieces of the overall 2010 schedule – namely the Opening Weekend prime time games, the Thanksgiving Day games and a few other high-intrigue matchups.

We were hearing this would likely happen again this year, some time on Monday or Tuesday. But NFL PR’s Brian McCarthy tweeted otherwise today, leaving us to wonder if the League will throw us a bone some time in the next two weeks. Stay tuned on that front.

Speaking of the schedule release… According to the conscientious and all-knowing denizens of the Falcons Message Boards, last year’s complete schedule release occurred on April 14. While we staffers will get a heads-up via internal memo very soon, you can find out the actual date around the same time by keeping an eye on NFL Network’s daily programming guide. Like last year, the network is planning an exclusive schedule release show to coincide with the official unveiling of all 32 teams’ season schedules.

We need to address OLB, DE, O-Line, and T.E. in this draft. I think we are done at corner. Like to see us trade out of first and move to 2nd and 3rd. I like Sean Lee (LB Penn St.), Matt Tennant (Center B.C.), Dennis Pitta (T.E.- BYU) all quality pics.

I Agree about trading down. I have been blogging this, however this way:
    Our 1st round and a 5th—- for — a late 1st round and a third(possibly 2nd)
This would give us a chance at 4 solid picks:
A late 1 stand 3-3rds, we have had good choices in previous thirds.
Mike, is there any possible tenders from other teams that we are looking at?

seriously. read the PFW scouting report on Anderson. states that most of his production came against lesser competition and as a result of the system, not his individual skill, and that he lacked elite edge rush first step. ALL of that has been born out in 3+ years.

That doesn’t mean not to use our 1st rounder on a DE. I trust the front office to have scouted appropriately; Jerry was playing GREAT (anyone count his double-teams he drew as a rookie!?!) when he went down, and Owens looks like a real keeper. Baker has been solid, Turner was a great find, Gonzalez was a terrific move…in short, all of the big decisions (plus the obvious of drafting Ryan) with our high picks/big splash in FA have been good or better so far.

I think if you watch the film available to the public, Graham is a little bit of a reach, but productive. Hughes gets washed out on running plays and doesn’t play to his size when facing even TEs. Witherspoon takes himself out of plays with mis-reads. If Haden would have fallen, he’d have been our pick, but right now, I’m thinking the BEST pick, long-term, is Pouncey. That said, TD picks on need, and until McClure is cooked, C is a “mild” need.

I think we’re all going to be a little surprised at how this draft plays out; unless TD finds the perfect edge rusher available at #19, we’ll trade down, possibly right out of round 1 (watch for deals with New England with all those 2nd round picks), because this is a deep draft with a number of “good but not great” CB/OLB/C/RB, and the Falcons could stand to find: another young corner with size, an OLB to replace Peterson next year and play ST this year, unless Adkins can do it, a C to back up McClure and possibly play G if Dahl walks next year or Blaylock regresses further, and an RB to replace Norwood’s role and spell Turner with a bit more pizzaz than Snelling (though I love the guy).

I share your pain about #98, but we have got to get a pass rush. Also, this is Dimitroff picking, not McKay!

    GET US A PASS RUSH!!!

All this talk of another 1st round DE, are we insane people. We still have to get rid of the last bust we picked. Is there a good 3rd round Tender DE available. This way we know it is not a bust like Anderson. Sorry Anderson if you are reading this, but you did not live up to First round potential.
